CUETS and SaskTel Offer
Electronic Commerce to Homes and Businesses
April 27, 1999 - Dan Baldwin,
Vice President of Strategic Business Development and
Marketing for SaskTel, and Stan Kuss, CEO of Credit
Union Electronic Transaction Services (CUETS), today
announced that a new electronic commerce service called
securelynxT is available commercially in Saskatchewan
and in Canada. securelynxT is one of the safest e-commerce
solutions available in the world because it uses SET
(Secure Electronic Transaction), a technical standard
for safeguarding payment card purchases made over open
networks such as the Internet.
"We exist in a global economy where
millions of people buy and sell products over the Internet,"
said Baldwin. "Opportunities for businesses and consumers
are growing at a rapid pace, and SaskTel wants to ensure
our customers have the tools they need to participate
in the Net Economy. Through our partnership with CUETS,
SaskTel can meet and exceed this goal."
"securelynxT, with the SET technology,
effectively removes the barriers for shopping online,"
said Kuss. "Now, both the consumer and the business
can receive confirmation of each other's identity and
the consumer's card information is protected. Even the
merchant never sees it. We are pleased to combine our
card expertise with SaskTel's strength as an innovator
in on-line technology to provide this leading-edge service
to Canadians."
To use securelynxT, merchants must
be authorized by CUETS to process MasterCard and other
credit card brand transactions. Once authorization is
complete, merchants can use SaskTel's QuantumLynx
E-Commerce package to develop their on-line stores.
CAA Saskatchewan, dot.com, Northcote Art n' Antiques
and Rugged Country are the first businesses to participate.
These businesses, as well as Chapters on-line store,
have posted their merchandise offers in SaskTel's virtual
mall, called malltitude.com.
To buy products and services using
the SET technology, consumers require a digital wallet,
which is available through securelynx.com. To use this
wallet, shoppers must initially have a Credit Union
MasterCard from any participating credit union in Canada.
