Our commitment to protecting customer privacy
As one of Canada's premium credit card organizations,
CU CREDIT strives to maintain the highest standards
of professionalism and integrity. An important part
of this is our commitment to maintaining the security,
confidentiality and accuracy of all personal information
we collect. The following principles outline our commitment
to this.
Collecting personal information
Either before or when we collect personal information,
we promise to explain what that information will be
used for and ask for the customer's consent for it to
be used in those ways-and we'll do our best to ensure
that customers understand what they are being asked
to consent to. We won't collect information beyond what
is relevant to the products and services we provide,
and we will not use personal information for anything
beyond what a customer has agreed to.
Disclosing personal information
We will not share personal information we have without
the customer's permission. The only exception to this
is when we need to transfer information to another company
for processing, in order to provide a product or service.
When we disclose information to a third party, we do
this on a confidential basis and with agreements in
place to ensure that the other party handles this information
securely and uses it only for the purposes the customer
has authorized. We never make our customer lists available
to companies that are not affiliated with us.
Protecting personal information
Customer information is at all times protected with
appropriate safeguards and security measures. We keep
personal information only as long as we need it in order
to fulfil the purposes for which it was obtained, or
as long as we are required to by law; and we do our
best to ensure that information we have about each customer
is always accurate and up-to-date.
Providing access to personal information
The customer may at any time inquire about the personal
information we have about them. We'll explain what information
we have, how we use it, and to whom we may disclose
it. If the customer believes any of the information
we have about them is incorrect, they have the right
to request that it be changed.
Respecting the customer's wishes
Our customers may ask us at any time to explain their
options of refusing or withdrawing consent for using
their personal information in certain ways. For some
purposes, like allowing us to determine a customer's
financial situation, consent is required. Consent for
other purposes is optional. For example, if customers
do not wish to receive information and offers on our
products and services, or do not wish their information
to be shared with their financial institution for this
purpose, they can let us know and we will respect their
decision. We will make ourselves easily available to
answer their questions, and will investigate and respond
to any concerns they may have about any aspect of the
way we handle personal information.
Why we need personal information
We ask customers for personal information in order
to determine their financial situation and their creditworthiness.
In order to minimize the risk of error or fraud, we
will ask for their Social Insurance Number (SIN) to
make sure that their information is never accidentally
confused with another person's. If a customer chooses
not to provide us with their SIN, this will not in and
of itself disqualify the customer from being offered
our products and services.
Some of our employees need access to personal information
in order to provide customers with the services they
receive from us. Only employees who need this information
have access to it, and they are bound to keep this information
confidential.
We also use customer information, with permission,
to keep our customers informed of products and services
we think they may be interested in, because we want
our customers to feel confident that of all of the products
and services we offer, they are receiving precisely
those that they feel are most suitable for themselves.
If, however, a customer would rather we didn't do this,
they can tell us not to and we will respect their wishes.
This will never affect our decision to extend credit
to that person or affect their eligibility for our products
and services.
When we disclose personal information
We disclose personal information in three situations:
when we outsource a specific task to an outside company,
when we are required to or permitted to by law, and
when we have the customer's permission to do so. In
all situations, we make sure that any organization receiving
personal information handles it in a secure and responsible
way.
- At times, we may use an outside company to do certain
work for us, for example manufacturing actual payment
cards and credit cards. In such situations, we select
the company carefully and make sure that its security
standards are as good as our own.
- In some situations, we are required or permitted
by law to disclose information. For example, we are
permitted to disclose information in order to collect
a debt.
- We also ask for the customer's permission to share
their personal information with affiliates such as
their financial institution, so that the affiliate
can determine which of their own products and services
the customer may be interested in.
How a customer can give or withdraw their consent
A customer's consent can be given in a variety of ways.
It can be implicit or explicit, written or verbal. In
using a card, cardholders signify their consent for
their personal information to be used in the ways described
in the Terms of Operation, and in signing an application
or an agreement, a customer may be giving their consent
for their information to be used for purposes described
in the agreement. A customer can also withdraw their
consent at any time for their information to be used
for certain purposes. For more information on customer
choices, please contact us at 1-800-561-7849 or write
to CU CREDIT, 2055 Albert St, Regina, Sask., S4P 3G8,
or send an e-mail to service@cucardsonline.com.
*This Privacy Code applies to the personal information
of CU CREDIT cardholders and MSB merchants only. Each
credit union or caisse populaire is responsible for
their own privacy policies for non-MSB merchants.
